Nipa Hut

The nipa hut also known as bahay kubo, is an indigenous house used in the Philippines. The native house is constructed out of bamboo tied together, with a thatched roof using nipa/anahaw leaves.

Nipa huts were the native houses of the indigenous people of the Philippines before the Spaniards arrived. They are still used today, especially in rural areas. Different architectural designs are present among the different ethno-linguistic groups in the country, although all of them conform to being stilt houses, similar to those found in neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau, and the Pacific Islands.

PHILIPPINE ARCHITECTURE

The Architecture of the Philippines is a reflection of the history and heritage of the Philippines. The most prominent historic constructions in the archipelago are from the Spanish Colonial period, though much Philippine architecture is also influenced by Japanese, Malay, Hindu, Chinese, and American cultures.

BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE

Baroque architecture, starting in the early 17th century in Italy, took the humanist Roman vocabulary of Renaissance architecture and used it in a new rhetorical, theatrical, sculptural fashion, expressing the triumph of absolutist church and state. New architectural concerns for color, light and shade, sculptural values and intensity characterize the Baroque.

The Baroque played into the demand for an architecture that was on the one hand more accessible to the emotions and, on the other hand, a visible statement of the wealth and power of the Church. The new style manifested itself in particular in the context of new religious orders, like the Theatines and the Jesuits, which aimed to improve popular piety. By the middle of the 17th century, the Baroque style had found its secular expression in the form of grand palaces, first in France—as in the Château de Maisons (1642) near Paris by François Mansart—and then throughout Europe.

GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE

Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and parish churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities, and to a less prominent extent, private dwellings.

It is in the great churches and cathedrals and in a number of civic buildings that the Gothic style was expressed most powerfully, its characteristics lending themselves to appeal to the emotions. A great number of ecclesiastical buildings remain from this period, of which even the smallest are often structures of architectural distinction while many of the larger churches are considered priceless works of art and are listed with UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. For this reason a study of Gothic architecture is largely a study of cathedrals and churches.

MESOPOTAMIAN ARCHITECTURE

ZIGGURAT

A ziggurat "to build on a raised area" is a temple tower of the ancient Mesopotamian valley and Iran, having the form of a terraced pyramid of successively receding stories.

Ziggurats were a form of temple common to the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians of ancient Mesopotamia.The earliest examples of the ziggurat date from the end of the third millennium BCE and the latest date from the 6th century BCE.

The Mesopotamian ziggurats were not places for public worship or ceremonies. They were believed to be dwelling places for the gods. Through the ziggurat the gods could be close to mankind and each city had its own patron god.

Only priests were permitted inside the ziggurat and it was their responsibility to care for the gods and attend to their needs. As a result the priests were very powerful members of Sumerian society.

There are 32 known ziggurats near Mesopotamia. Four of them are in Iran, and the rest are mostly in Iraq. The most recent to be discovered was Sialk, in central Iran.

GREEK ARCHITECTURE

TEMPLE

The temple was the most common and best-known form of Greek public architecture. The temple did not serve the same function as a modern church, since the altar stood under the open sky in the temenos or sacred fane, often directly before the temple. Temples served as storage places for the treasury associated with the cult of the god in question, as the location of a cult image, and as a place for devotees of the god to leave their votive offerings, such as statues, helmets and weapons. The inner room of the temple, the cella, served mainly as a strongroom and storeroom. It was usually lined by another row of columns. Some Greek temples were oriented astronomically.

THE GREEK COLUMN

he Greek used the column, as a pillar to support a building and occasionally as a freestanding monument. Columns may have a circular or polygonal cross section and are at least four times taller than they are wide. In classical architecture, a column is a shaft that usually rests on a base and is topped by an enlarged section called a capital.

The ancient Greeks developed three distinctive, carefully proportioned styles of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. In all three styles, the surface of the shaft is grooved with shallow vertical flutings.

ROMAN ARCHITECTURE

The Architecture of Ancient Rome at first adopted the external Greek architecture for their own purposes, which were so different from Greek buildings as to create a new architectural style. The two styles are often considered one body of classical architecture. However, by the late Republic, the architectural style developed its own highly distinctive style by introducing the previously little-used arches, vaults and domes. A crucial factor in this development, coined the Roman Architectural Revolution, was the invention of concrete. The Romans, similarly, were indebted to their Etruscan neighbors and forefathers who supplied them with a wealth of knowledge essential for future architectural solutions, such as hydraulics and in the construction of arches.

EGYPTIAN ARCHITECTURE

PYRAMID

Probably the most famous structure in all of Egypt, the Pyramids are still on of the worlds best architectural achievement, even though they were built many centuries ago. These structures can be as tall as 482 feet (147 m) high. The Pyramid towers over many other famous landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty.

The first true pyramid was build at saqqara for the king Zoser. It was called a step pyramid because of its step shape. The later pyramids were smooth sided, like the Great Pyramid at Giza, built for the king Khufu about 4,500 years ago.

COLUMNS

Scattered throughout Egypt, you may see some large brown columns. These structures are made of granite and they all have some hieroglyphics on it. You may see some sort of design on the top of the columns. Well, these designs are all based on things that are in Egypt. You may see the lotus flower, papyrus, palm, eight-sided column, and a proto-Dorix or sixteen-sided column. Each of these are all very interesting and fun to look at.

These columns were built to support buildings, obviously. However, many times, you see only the column standing. The reason being, is that the building which it was supporting was either torn down, fell down, or was destroyed because of vandalism. Lets hope that the columns that are left today will still be here tomorrow.

STATUES & MONUMENTS

Also scattered throughout Egypt are stone figures. These figures could look like a tiger, a king, and eagle, or maybe even a mixture of both. Perhaps the best know stone figure of them all is the Sphinx. It is a figure of a kings head who is wearing the striped headcloth (nemes). His body is that of a lion.

Mixed reactions to Carlo J as National Artist

Pro and con views on the conferment of Carlo J. Caparas as National Artist for Visual Arts and Film continue to pour in.

On Channel 7’s “Startalk” last Aug. 8, Senators Bong Revilla and Jinggoy Estrada as well as boxing champ Manny Pacquiao-- star of Caparas’ latest directorial project, “Sa Ngalan ng Busabos”—congratulated Caparas whom they said fully deserved the award.

Their views, however, were a stark contrast to that of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines which staged a rally on Aug. 7 at the CCP, protesting the selection of Caparas and Cecille Guidote-Alvarez (for Theater) for allegedly “tainting” what is widely considered the highest citation for a Filipino artist.

In the rally, APO Hiking Society’s Jim Paredes rebutted Caparas’ claim that his critics are elitists who look down on a rags-to-riches success like him [Caparas].

Director Joel Lamangan also clarified that they are not questioning Caparas’ achievements but rather that of the traditional selection process being “bypassed”.

Lamangan pointed out that Caparas’ name was not even in the shortlist of three nominees that was submitted by the committee for consideration.

Caparas also has foes—and allies—in the komiks industry.
Writer and illustrator Randy Valiente told Manila Bulletin Online in an interview that he believes there are other people more deserving of the award that Caparas won.

One of these, he said, is Francisco Coching who is “the [acknowledged] dean of Philippine comics.”

Valiente – an officer of Kongreso ng Komiks that Caparas heads - pointed out that he is an admirer of Caparas’ contributions to and achievements in the komiks industry.

“[Pero] mali lang category kung saan s’ya nanalo,” said Valiente who wrote more of his sentiments on the matter on his blog
Valiente also lamented Caparas’ apparent abandonment of Kongreso ng Komiks.

“We have no project except for the komiks caravan that brought us to the Visayas. Nothing happened after that,” he said with a hint of disappointment.

Valiente’s colleague Arman Francisco, on the other hand, believes that Caparas won in the correct category because it is the writer who “directs” the illustrator on what to draw.

“A writer makes an illustration guide for the illustrator to follow. This illustration guide is not only for the story but also the visuals,” he explained.

Caparas, who has been a player in the komiks industry since age 18, created Filipino komiks classics “Panday,” “Bakekang” and “Totoy Bato,” among others.

He eventually shifted to screenwriting and directing, which is what he had been doing for the last 23 years.

Carlo J. Caparas named National Artist for Visual Arts

It was at the airport that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was on her way to the United States to meet with US President Barrack Obama, announced that “Komiks King” Carlo J. Caparas has been named National Artist for Visual Arts.

When asked about his feelings for this new feat he has achieved, Carlo said, “Siyempre nakaka-overwhelm. Imagine someone like me na galing sa masa, na nagsusulat lang ng komiks before in my youth ay mabibigyan ng ganitong karangalan.”

When he was told of his award, Carlo said he remembered the late Fernando Poe, Jr. “Kasi when I was still a struggling filmmaker, I had the chance to talk to him and I said, “Erap, nakuha mo lahat ng awards at titulo. Movie King ka at marami ka ng iba’t-ibang awards na natanggap. What’s next? Ano pa ba ang gusto mong ma-achieve? An international award?

“Ang sagot niya sa akin: ‘Erap, ang gusto ko maging National Artist!’ Which he got naman, but posthumously, ibinigay sa kanya after his death. Yon ang malungkot…”

Carlo started writing for komiks when he was only 18. He was also a komiks illustrator and he related that as a young boy, for lack of the necessary writing materials, he used their backyard to illustrate his ideas. “Ang bakuran namin ang malaking illustration board ko,” Carlo recalled.

Carlo went on to become a most prolific and successful komiks writer during his time and was eventually dubbed “Komiks King,” a title that he took with great pride especially now that komiks has been defined as the “International Theater of the World.”

From komiks writing, Carlo tried his hand at movie scriptwriting and directing and proved himself equally successful. For 23 years, he directed various genres of movies, most of which turned out to be box-office hits. He also made the stars of his movies, among them Kris Aquino, phenomenal box-office star.

And now his komiks creations are being adapted for television, the most recent of which were “Totoy Bato,” which starred Robin Padilla and Regine Velasquez, and “Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang,” starring Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. Both were topraters on GMA 7. There were also Caparas’ creative works (like “Panday” and “Pieta”) that were televised on ABS-CBN and there are still many which will be used for future teleseryes in the two giant networks.

“Actually, there are about 30 of my novels na nakakahon na,” he revealed.

Through his creations that were used as teleseryes, Carlo noted that more actors were given jobs. “Ito kasing telebisyon ang pinaka-active na medium ngayon.”

Going back to his award as National Artist for Visual Arts, Carlo said, “makakatulong ito ng malaki sa industriya na isang active member ay nabigyan ng ganitong recognition.” Komiks writing is alive again and all because of Carlo’s tireless efforts to revive it nationwide with the support of the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

But is his being a National Artist his ultimate achievement? Carlo laughed as he said, “I’m very proud of this but pangalawa ito. My first ultimate achievement was my wife, nang mapaibig ko si Donna Villa!” The couple went on to become a most formidable and indefatigable tandem in producing films and TV projects.

Seriously speaking, the award was sort of anticipated as Carlo has already been the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Merit which was given him in 2007. “Ang nakakatawa nito, lahat ng mga kasama kong nabigyan ng Presidential Medals of Merit ay patay na.” They were Francisco Coching, Tony Velasquez, Larry Alcala, among others.

As National Artist for Visual Arts Carlo will be recognized in all important occasions in Malacañang like state visits.

Carlo’s current movie project

Carlo is currently filming a trilogy that is why he and Donna are almost always in the province (in Cebu especially where Donna hails). One episode, “Sa Ngalan ng Busabos,” stars Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao and Jake Cuenca. Initially, Manny’s leading lady was supposed to be Nicole of the Pussycat Dolls but the latter reportedly begged off because of her busy schedule.

The other two episodes are entitled “Hawak Kita, Hawak Mo Ako,” and “Hiwaga ni Lolo Hugo.”

National Artists choices questioned

This year's list of new National Artists prompted controversy with the naming of Jose “Carlo” J. Caparas for visual arts and films and Cecilia Guidote-Alvarez for theater arts.

Of the seven new national artists, three were chosen through the regular process of nomination and deliberation by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. These were Manuel Conde for cinema, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz for visual arts, and Lazaro Franciso for literature.

The other four, including Caparas and Alvarez, were added to the list by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whose power it is to confer the title of National Artist. Also chosen by Malacanang were Francisco “Bobby” Mañoza for architecture and Jose “Pitoy” Moreno for fashion design.

“I hate it when the President meddles with the system of selecting National Artists,” said National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario who was part of the deliberation committee.

“While she has the power to intervene, the system of selection works and she does not have any reason to use her presidential privilege.”

The choice of Alvarez for National Artist raised eyebrows as she is also executive director of the NCAA and presidential adviser on culture. Newsbreak called the selection “shameless” and a situation of “delicadeza” or a conflict of interest although Alvarez herself was not present during deliberations.

“I hate even more when people take advantage of this presidential privilege by submitting their names directly to the President,” said Virgilio.

Caparas, on the other hand, was attacked as unworthy of the title National Artist. Comic book writer and artist Gerry Alanguilan leads the protest, saying on his blog that Caparas could not be cited for visual arts as he never did the illustrations for his comics himself. Being deemed a National Artist for Film was also “ridiculous” as his movies “lack any intellectual substance.”

“Other artists are vastly more qualified,” he said. “I cannot sit here and do nothing and say nothing as this insult is perpetrated.”

One problem with the modern Olympics is that it has become very big and expensive to operate. The city or country that hosts the games often loses a lot of money. A stadium, pools, and playing fields must be built for the athletic events and housing is needed for the athletes who come from around the world. And all of these facilities are used for only 2 weeks! In 1984, Los Angeles solved these problems by charging a fee for companies who wanted to be official sponsors of the games. Companies like McDonald's paid a lot of money to be part of the Olympics. Many buildings that were already built in the Los Angeles area were also used. The Coliseum where the 1932 games were held was used again and many colleges and universities in the area became playing and living sites.

Exposition is a type of oral or written discourse that is used to explain, describe, give information or inform. The creator of an expository text can not assume that the reader or listener has prior knowledge or prior understanding of the topic that is being discussed. One important point to keep in mind for the author is to try to use words that clearly show what they are talking about rather then blatantly telling the reader what is being discussed. “My Trip to the River”

This story happened a few years ago, when I was smaller. It was a cold day, so my mom bundled up my brother and I. That was usual.
My family (including me), and some of my mom’s friends went on a trip to the river. I can’t remember what my mom’s friends name’s were.
Malcolm, my brother, was bored, so he decided to pick on me. You know how brothers are.
We road in a boat. It was my first time riding in a boat. I didn’t get to ride in boat’s that often. Malcolm was teasing me about the boat tipping. Then, my mom dropped the paddle. She got it back though.
We ate, and then headed on up the trail that led to the truck.
Malcolm reached out for my hat and missed. It fell in the river. He reached out to pick it up as it started to drift away. He reached a little further. Malcolm got ahold of it.
Splash! He fell in. My brother started to panic.
Help I’m drowning! he said. Everyone just stood there.
One of my mom’s friends told him to stand up if he wanted to live. He found out the water was only up to his knees. I lauged. He didn’t think it was funny!

“Yellow Mama”

When I was one year old we moved to a ranch about seven miles from the highway. After we arrived and were fairly well settled we found out there were some cats living on the ranch too. Yellow Mama was one of them. She was a yellow cat with a white bib.
Yellow Mama was a gentle cat, in the years that followed she had at least five batches of kittens. She cared for them all, they usually looked like her, but not always. Sometimes she had six kittens in one batch!
When I was seven years old Yellow Mama was still with us. During the summer, Kirk, my brother who was nine, and I decided we wanted to climb a big rock on the hillside near our house. We were almost to the rock when I saw poor Yellow Mama lying near a brush, dead. I told Kirk to come see what had happened.
We were both very sad, we had loved her very much. We decided not to climb the rock, I was crying. When we were running back to the house, mom heard me crying and came out to see if I was hurt. We told her what had happened and then went into the house.
When dad came home we told him. The next day he buried Yellow Mama. Said it looked like a snake or something had bitten her neck.
I will never forget Yellow Mama. I am eleven years old and still think about how nice and kind she was, she had been a good cat.
